Set up a digital photo booth with a laptop
A laptop is a stable option for a digital photo booth, especially for longer events. With a bigger screen and steady power, you get a reliable setup that guests can easily use.
What do you need?
Laptop — Windows, Mac or Chromebook with a built-in or external webcam.
Power supply — Keep the laptop plugged in throughout the event to avoid running out of battery.
Internet connection (Wi-Fi or wired) — Needed to upload photos to Snaplet.
Snaplet event created — Create your event in advance via Snaplet.
Optional external mouse or keyboard — Makes it easier to adjust settings without moving the laptop.
How to set up a laptop as a photo booth
Create or open your event in Snaplet. Sign in to your account and find the event you want to use.
Activate the photo booth view from the dashboard. This opens an interface optimised for guest use.
Open the view in a browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge all work).
Switch to full screen so the photo booth interface fills the whole screen and guests don't see anything else.
Plug in power and make sure the laptop stays connected to the charger throughout the evening.
Ensure a stable internet connection on the laptop. Wi-Fi or wired — both work.
Advantages of a laptop
Bigger screen: Guests can see themselves clearly as they take photos, and there's room for instructions.
Steady power: Plug in the charger and forget about battery worries during the event.
Easy HDMI connection: The laptop can connect directly to a TV or projector if you also want to show the live gallery.
Combine with live gallery: Open the photo booth in one browser tab and the live gallery in another.
Internet and stability
Snaplet runs online. The laptop needs an internet connection to upload photos and display the photo booth interface.
Both photo uploads and displaying the photo booth require internet. You can use Wi-Fi or connect the laptop directly to the network with a cable.
A wired network can give extra stability compared to Wi-Fi, especially if many guests are on the same wireless network.
Setup tips
Use a table or stand: Place the laptop steadily at a suitable height so guests don't have to bend down or reach up.
Keep it charging all evening: Connect the charger and adjust power settings so the laptop doesn't go to sleep.
Test the setup before the event starts: Take sample photos and check lighting, camera angle and internet connection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use an older laptop?
Yes, as long as it has a browser and can connect to the internet. Most laptops from the last 5–6 years work fine.
Does it require installation?
No. Snaplet runs straight in the browser, so there's no software or app to install on the laptop.
Can I use the same laptop for the live gallery?
Not at the same time. But you can connect the laptop to an external screen via HDMI and show the live gallery there while the laptop is used as a photo booth.
Can I use multiple laptops?
Yes. You can open the photo booth view on several laptops at the same event, and every photo gathers in the same gallery.
What happens if the browser closes?
The photo booth stops working. Sign back in and open the photo booth view again. Previous photos are saved and aren't lost.
What if the internet becomes unstable?
Photos can't be uploaded without internet. Consider using a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi if the connection is weak.
